Iron is derived from iron ore and treated in the presence of carbon and other elements, to form steel with better strength and durability. This chemical transformation of iron to steel is conducted in the environment of oxygen. So, all steel plants need a steady supply of pure and dry oxygen for their production. MVS Engineering Pvt. Ltd offers the most effective onsite oxygen generation plant for steel industry, which remains functional 24×7.
Different stages where oxygen is used in the steel industry
The PSA or VPSA oxygen plant of MVS Engineering produces highly pure oxygen that is devoid of traces of all other gases. Though oxygen is commercially used mainly for combustion or oxidation, this highly reactive gas has many uses in steel industries.
● The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) is used for the primary stage of the steel manufacturing process. Pig iron is purified in this furnace, by oxidizing all other chemicals, like silicon, phosphorous, manganese, and carbon. In this way, the percentage of impurities can be brought down from 6% to 1% in steel.
● The molten steel is tapped out of the furnace after completing the primary production stage. Then it undergoes the secondary stage for manufacturing steel before casting. In this stage, oxygen is needed to reduce the percentage of hydrogen and nitrogen in the molten steel.
● The air blown into the blast furnace becomes more effective when its oxygen level is increased by the addition of excess oxygen. Blast furnaces are used for the smelting of iron ore, to produce pig iron.
● Oxygen is the most preferred fuel to be used in casting machines and burners. Thus, the casting machine can operate continuously for the cutting of cast iron. Burners fuelled by oxygen are used to reheat the furnaces.
